I love and honor the fire in your chest! We should all have a raging fire inside considering what is happening in this country. I know I do, and I also don’t always know where to go with it.

I’m one of the leaders of a food pantry in our town. I’ve volunteered in food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, etc., since my 20s. I’ve been with this one for 16 years. Never before this year — in any of the places I’ve volunteered — have we been concerned that our own government would invade our space and capture and drag away our guests. Since 47 took office a year ago, I informed the folks I work with that I would put my body between any government official and our guests if it came to that. When ICE had a big presence in our area recently, we received instructions from the governing organization of many pantries in the area stating that if ICE and or CPB came to our pantry we absolutely could not resist or get involved in any way. I’ve struggled with that since the moment I read the documents. I don’t know that I can stand by and let that happen. So parts of your question resonate with me and reverberates within my being almost daily (not concerned about my reputation in this case):

What would I be willing to risk if it ever came to that?

My comfort?

My safety?

My freedom?

My life?

I don’t know the answer either, Christy, but I know for sure I would do something. If, god forbid, it happens, I will know in that moment what is mine to do. Since my 20s I have been Red Cross certified in CPR and Water Safety and have used both to help people several+ times in my life. I am trained to help in an emergency. It’s a certification and it’s also in my bones. I think it would be unable to stand by in that situation.

“They chose a higher law. They broke unjust laws to protect human lives.”

Unjust laws. An oxymoron that explains where we are. Thank you Christi for continuing to beat the drum reminding us there is a higher law to choose.
